Youth and PoliticsYouth and Politics, a project with a duration of six months, organised by De Connectors and Gemeente Breda, had its final debate yesterday. Students from 6 schools in Breda are participating with the aim to develop a concept and a plan around a political topic or problem. This year’s topic was to get the elderly more involved in social activities. The wining team is given a €5000 budget to create their concept. During the project, each team was coached by a council supervisor and trained into the practices of debating. The students worked hard and the results were truly impressive. Stay tuned to watch the after movie.
The Dancer AwakensThis year at the local Go-Short International film festival The Creative Lab is participating with a never-done-before concept: a short film viewed with Microsoft’s HoloLens. The HoloLens is an augmented reality device in which the user can interact with holograms while still being in the real space.
The short film is called: “The Dancer Awakens” and the story is about a dancer trapped inside a music box, that needs to overcome her fear and escape. But by doing so she exposes herself to new threats. The ability to view the movie made of holographic imagery, augmented by the real objects around you, is the core feature that this core movie is based around.
The Project is a collaboration between Cradle, IMEM, IGAD and The Creative Lab, that resulted in the Dancer Awakens. Motion Capture technology was used to create the visuals. Motion Capture is the innovative technology represented by recording the movements done by the dancer and translate them into computer generated graphics. It’s the same technology used for making movies and video games.

TEDx Breda 360 after movie (2016)On November 3rd, The Creative Lab interns Sammy and Michelle headed out to the Mezz in Breda where a series of talks were going to take place throughout the day. The TEDx Program is designed to help communities, organizations and individuals to spark conversation and connection through local TED-like experiences. The TEDx event’s talks and videos trigger reflective discussions and connections at a personal level. The theme of the day was Game On, which explored different approaches of games and gamification. There was a focus on the possibilities provided by gaming and the ability to learn through play.
The main objective for the day was to record a 360-degree after-movie that would reflect the highlights and journey of the event. We had a camera set up on stage so that each speaker would be incorporated as well as the audience and their reactions while being immersed in stories and experiences. Not only did we film the talks, we also focused on all scenes related to the show, for example, the chef preparing food, the control room and the green room. Each talk inspired us to think about real issues at hand or something we all face at some point in our lives and ways of undertaking it and learning from there.
Festival of the Democracy (2016)The 15th of September is known as the International Day of the Democracy, the 2016 edition however, had a very special touch to it. The municipality of Breda asked the creatives of PakhuisB to organize an exceptional festival that revolves around the theme democracy, and explores possible alternatives. Not only alderman, but especially the people of Breda were invited to come along and share how they felt they could be more involved in local politics. A multitude of speeches were very informative, raising awareness and encouraging us to think of social problems and ecological solutions in a co-creative manner. The festival served as a platform to address issues and initiate changes for the local Breda democratic model of decision making and debating.
The Creative Lab was asked to make sure this would stay a very memorable moment we could relive again. Our intern Michelle, together with IMEM students Ray Tran and Bas Berendse headed out early to the event to set up and capture the full atmosphere the day would bring. Setting up a GoPro to record a time lapse, and multiple camera's moving around the city hall and square to interview multiple stakeholders and capture the best moments. PakhuisB had set up a few installations and sessions for the visitors to join and share their ideas. For example, anyone was free to write up their thoughts on the Klaagmuur (the wall of complaints) at which freedom of expression was key.
After interviewing the main speakers who shared their insight and future plans for the city, we interviewed the mayor of Breda himself who also expressed the need for democracy and public opinion. Throughout the day there were workshops, performances, great food and many through-provoking speeches. The final footage was edited into different short videos as well as a longer after movie, which you can find online!
Eneco Tour 360 after movie (2016)On Tuesday 19th of September, roads around the Chasséveld were closed off for the prominent annual Eneco Tour, a cycling tour sponsored by Eneco Energy. The route was 9.6 kilometers and cyclists would individually compete and beat their personal best.
The Creative Lab was there to produce a 360 degrees after-movie in collaboration with the Province Brabant that would enable viewers to relive the experience of this day from numerous angles. Filming in 360 is becoming more popular as it immerses viewers in a way never possible before, using untraditional points of view which allow for a unique experience. Now, the industry continues to develop better cameras and 360-production systems. Ensuring a smoother workflow for 360 production.
It was remarkable to see the amount of planning that had taken place to organize such an event. The event would be broadcasted within 68 different countries. It was also amusing to view the precision and dedication the cyclists were embedded with as they would arrive in their teams and proceed to warm up in style. Such diverse cultures had gathered to celebrate the competition.
The Creative Lab team split to different sections on location to capture the atmosphere such as the starting point with the commentator and alongside the road while spectators cheered. All in all it was an entertaining day packed with excitement and teamwork.
The after-movie was produced by:
Mike Klaassen- Project Manager/Director/Camera/Post-production
Michelle Righolt- Pre-production/Camera
Fabienne Zuidgeest- Camera
Paul van Rijckevorsel- Camera

XSTNCE (2016)The Academy for Digital Entertainment's Creative Lab produced a 360 film for the International Film Festival 'Go Short' in Nijmegen, with a very special camera from Samsung.
Virtual Reality and 360 filmmaking has been a growing market in the last couple of years. With the Samsung Gear VR and upcoming technologies like the Samsung Gear 360 camera, Virtual Reality is becoming accessible for larger audiences. The Creative Lab has been collaborating with the International Short Film Festival 'Go Short' in Nijmegen for three years now, in creating innovative film. Three years ago, their first production 'Dyskinetic' was released. One of the world's first experiments in creating a 360 degree drama film.
Now the Academy for Digital Entertainment has a collaboration agreement between them and Samsung, The Creative Lab had the unique opportunity to be one of the first work with the Samsung Gear 360 camera. Creating the short film titled 'XSTNCE'.
XSTNCE is a 360 degree short film, produced by the interns of the Creative Lab. Put on the Samsung Gear Virtual Reality headset and become a character in the film yourself. Find out about Professor Eilo Grand and his assistant Zena Tanning whom are working on the secret XSTNCE project. They seem to have achieved a major breakthrough. However, when things seem to go well, they run into some problems. Technological as well as personal. Will the XSTNCE program succeed? And how well do the researchers actually know each other?
KLM (2015)With the combined forces of Brilljant Net’s production team and our Creative Lab’s innovative ideas we have just finished our project for KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines). We have successfully designed and created an ingenious animation for the Dutch Airlines. We would like to thank KLM for this opportunity and we are currently in an exploratory phase with KLM for a new project which will be a 360° degree interactive video for the Google cardboard.
Bress (2015)Bress sports center in Breda just finished redesigning their gym. With this occasion they have prepared a grand opening of the reorganized gym which was held Monday, the 30th of November. For this, we were asked if it’s possible to record the event.
The evening’s most important moment was the press conference, where people from the industry were there to have a few words about Bress, about future plans and even more improvements. We have live streamed the conference and we have also decided to make an after movie of the evening that shows people the whole event and not only the conference. There were three cameras on the field, one for the streaming of the conference and two for the after movie.
The Prism (2015)Officer Winters and Reed aim to find out the truth behind an aggressive car theft by questioning Emma Garner about her brother. Officer Bell supervises the situation in the interrogation room from an observation room behind a one-way mirror. Throughout the room there are photographs and documents on the case and suspect spread out in every corner. Officer Bell holds back the eager and less experienced officer Winters who allows his temper to get the better of him. Meanwhile officer Reed is using her expertise to get Emma to provide her with specific information, however Emma is conflicted whether or not to help the police, as she doesn't want to betray her brother's trust.
