Happened to have missed the Narrative Writing Exhibition? Don’t worry, here is a quick recap for you!
The Narrative Writing Exhibition is a project that took place from 11th November – 28th November 2019 across the BUas campus. The project was brought to life by a collaboration from Oscar Bastiaens, the Narrative Writing Workshop and The Creative Lab. It demonstrated the process of a Chinese Whisper, which is defined as “a sequence of repetitions of a story, each one differing slightly from the original, so that the final telling bears only a scant resemblance to the original.”
The Chinese Whisper changes shape as it passes different people’s ears, minds and mouths. It proves the impact that (sub)conscious interpretations can have, by showing how they can completely change the outcome or result of what is said and understood.
A group of talented artists, consisting of wordsmiths, painters and musicians, most of which are from BUas, decided to give the Chinese Whisper a twist, that would display the whispering process in a creative way. It all started with a poem, divided into six parts, after which an interpretation of the poem was expressed on six different canvases. These six paintings were sent to six different musicians, who each transformed the visual art into music. Finally, these six different pieces of music were sent to six writers, who wrote a story. The Narrative Writing Exhibition displayed how the whispering process artistically evolved and gave visitors a chance to compare the first poem to the final stories.
The Narrative Writing Exhibition was displayed across campus in the Sibeliuslaan, Horizon, Frontier and Ocean buildings. Each building displayed a different whisper and therefore different parts of the story. To make sure each building accommodated various parts of the whisper, the whispers were alternated on each Thursday during the time of the exhibition.

On the final day of the exhibition, the 28th November, we celebrated the artworks of the Narrative Writing Exhibition as well as their artistic creators! This wrap party took place at Borrel Bar Breda and was free for everyone to join: from artists, to art-lovers. Not only did we welcome everyone with a free drink, we also had all the artworks on display and the exhibition’s music playing through the speakers, for everyone to enjoy it together one final time. The exhibition’s artists that attended the Wrap Party got a chance to comment on their art, as well as discuss it with other attendees.
Overall, it was a great evening, with great art and lovely people!
We would like to give a special thanks to the artists of the Narrative Writing Exhibition:
