We discussed it in a previous article already: The Narrative Writing Exhibition. Although we may have been a bit mysterious about it before, we can finally tell you more!
To refresh your memory: The Narrative Writing Exhibition, executed by the Narrative Writing Workshop given by Oscar Bastiaens, will demonstrate the process of a Chinese Whisper Challenge. A Chinese Whisper is defined as “a sequence of repetitions of a story, each one differing slightly from the original, so that the final telling bears only a scant resemblance to the original”. For this project, one participant of the Narrative Writing Workshop wrote a poem. This poem has then been passed onto another participant of the workshop, who translated this single poem into six beautiful paintings. Each of these paintings was given to a new individual, who translated what they saw on the canvas into a musical piece. These six music pieces were then given to six new individuals in order to be translated back into the written word. This whole process was created in order to see what would be left of the original story written at the beginning of this challenging and fun project. We can’t reveal too much about the outcome yet, simply because it would be much more enjoyable to see for yourself! But what we can tell you is that the outcome may pleasantly surprise you.
Therefore, we wanted to make sure that you get to enjoy and view this awesome project yourself! From start to finish, all instalments will be up on display so you can follow the creative process, and Chinese Whisper, as if you were part of the project from the very beginning. The Narrative Writing Exhibition will take place from the 11th of November to the 28th of November, 2019. The six displays will be scattered around the BUas Campus. The exact locations of the displays will be released at a later date, but we can already reveal that you will be able to find them at the Horizon, Frontier and Ocean building, as well as Sibeliuslaan! More information and an official invitation for this event will follow later, so keep a close eye on your mailbox!
Join The Creative Realm of Storytelling
The first Narrative Writing Workshop of the new academic year has already taken place. Thanks to Oscar Bastiaens and the great turn-out of students it was an amazing evening, filled with interesting stories and novels of the future. We are looking forward to the next session! Have you missed the first session, but enjoy writing, would you describe yourself as the Picasso of words, or discuss your work with others? Then the Narrative Writing Workshop is the place to be for you!
The workshop given by Oscar Bastiaens will take place twice a month on either Tuesday or Wednesday and starts at 6pm, at the Horizon Building (Monseigneur Hopmansstraat 2) in room Ho.2.010. The workshop itself has no fee and is open to all BUas staff members and students. Feel free to send us an email for more details about the workshop and join this creative experience.
